FORMULA 86 FILM SUPERCUT

INTRO

This is the first video in my new “Music in Motion” series, a collection of visual interpretations of my tracks for my website and YouTube channel.

My music is often inspired by film. Sometimes a story unfolds in a track that deserves to be told visually as well as audibly. Scoring a film has long been a dream of mine, so I see this series as an experiment in that direction. Without the resources to produce original footage, I decided to explore using scenes from my favourite films and TV shows to express the cinematic worlds behind my music.

INSPIRATION & COMPOSITION

Formula 86 was inspired by the 1990 film The Witches, which was often on TV when I was a child. The track features a witch’s laugh and a build in the second half that reflects a chase scene from the film. The cover art nods to the potion in the film that turns children into mice, “Formula Eighty Six,” hidden inside a book. I created it using a combination of generative AI and (a lot of) retouching to achieve the look I was aiming for for the book, bottle and illustrations. I added all of the text (titles and unintelligible handwritten text) myself afterwards to ensure it would all look and fit the way I wanted it to.

FILM SUPERCUT

I learned Adobe Premiere Pro from scratch to create a supercut featuring iconic witch characters from 19 films and TV shows, all cut to Formula 86.

While writing this piece, I realised something uncanny: the clips I chose span exactly 86 years of film and television. Eighty six years of witches for Formula 86. Total coincidence… or maybe not? 🪄

The process gave me a deep appreciation for the craft of editing and the time and precision it requires. Through experimentation, I developed a workflow that kept things organised and efficient. I documented my process for future projects and now feel confident editing. I look forward to expanding this skill set in upcoming Music in Motion pieces.
